Well, my "85ish Snapper is starting to give me trouble again...and again... I"ve always been leary of it"s reliability but for less than $700 (including fixing it several times) it got me through a winter of snow blowing and mowed my yard well enough. I just don"t have the time anymore to keep fixing this thing after school at 9pm in the middle of my driveway in January.

So who makes a good garden tractor? Would be used to mow about 2 acres in the spring, summer, and fall and blow off a driveway in the winter. I grew up driving my dad"s John Deere"s and have fond feelings for them, but don"t necessarily know much about them. I also can maybe get a discount at Lowe"s so the Troy-Bilt, Cub-Cadet, and Husqvarna mowers stand out to me. I"m wanting at least a 48" deck and a 48" snow blower to go with it along with a twin cylinder engine.

What features should I look for?

The main feature is quality,if u plan to keep the machine a long time.Just because a machine is new doesent mean it will not become faulty.Be sure u do your homework on parts availablity, and who will service the unit. For example Home Depot recruits small sometimes great small engine shops to do their warranty work. But at the same time may not be the the place u would want to visit. So just do some homework and make your choice wisely

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I've heard that like many things, a lot of the tractor makers don't actually make their tractors anymore. Any truth to this? Basically I just want a strong tractor that will serve me reliably, be worth the cash hit, be strong and powerful, and just work. I like the Snapper because it's simple and well...simple...but it's just not reliable after 20 years of neglect by prior owners. Too bad really...

Well, visited Lowe's today and checked out the Husky's and Cubs. I like the Cubs a bit more for the features you get and the ease of use. However I noticed the disparity in model transitions. There's a 19hp with a 42" deck for $1600 and then the next step up is a garden tractor with a 26hp engine and a 54" deck for a grand more. Yow! Prices for the snow blowers aren't cheap either. Need to do some more reasearch I guess.

Thanks guys.

Cub Cadets are made by MTD as are most other makes. See my post I just put on, MTD and my wife works at Lowes so I know the discount thing. Do you or wife work at Lowes? If so if you order a special order mower in you can get it cheaper than buying one off the floor. Non't know if JD is now made by MTD or not. All my mowers are 1968-71

Ludwig and Leroy:

MTD does NOT make tractors for Deere. The L-series are made right along side the GT, GX, LX, LT and X-series tractors. The L-series at HD is meant to COMPETE with the MTD, Sears, Husky, etc, but they are still Deere units. They are identical to the ones the dealers have. The dealers just have access to the bigger models.

MTD makes like 90% of all lawn tractors including if I'm not mistaken the cheapest of the Deere machines.

I'm in a similar situation in that my elderly White was getting pretty tired. It only gets used for mowing around on the farm maybe 2-3 times a year but I didn't like spending a day fixing it per use when I only get a couple weeks on the farm a year. We'd bought a cheap MTD which is a fair mower but its nice to have two so my wife and I can mow at the same time.
I ended up picking up a 1967 Cub Cadet 72, its a 7hp with a 38" mowing deck, for your situation you'd probably want a 12hp.
I put a rebuilt motor in so its quite reliable, heavy as heck and that 7hp will do more work than the 12hp MTD every single day.

I know you don't really want to look at used but you mentioned being partial to the Deeres. You should visit my buddies at Weekendfreedommachines.org and see what they do in similar situations.

Once you get the JD GT collecting bug, it would be a whole new ballgame. You would want one for mowing and one for plowing snow. Then next thing you know you will want to start buying plows and discs and cultivators.

I would really consider a nice original 214, 216 or 316 or 318 in your position. I would even consider a restored 140. The advantage is, even if you wear them out, which you won't, they are still going to be worth money if you decide to get rid of them. In fact there is a real good chance that you could buy a nice one that has been well maintained, keep it for 10 years and sell it for more than what you paid for it.

Think of it as an investment. You would not be able to do that with the other lawn tractors you mentioned. The tasks you want to accomplish are really beyond what a lawn tractor bought at a box store will be able to do on a long term basis. Depending on where you are, you might be able to talk one of our members into letting you take one of their tractors for a spin just to feel the difference. I would let you on my 318 or 210. It truly is amazing the difference in ride between a new lawn tractor and an old garden tractor.

Just some points to ponder. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

My vote goes with Steve's suggestion. 5 years ago we bought a new Craftsman lawn tractor 19 1/2hpB&S with a hydro snowblower, bagger and front blade. We cut about 1 1/2 and its already starting to fall apart most noticably there is a lot of play in the steering. This past spring we bought 2 JD318's they have bigger decks, hydro drive and powersteering plus a wide variety of optional equipment. They are a serious machine. Especially when compared to our Craftsman they have 18hp engines and do not stall in long grass like the Craftsman does. My dealer stocks most parts and they are available very quickly if they don't have them in stock.
Do yourself a favour and check them out!
