Hey Gang,
Is there any way to diagnose a Briggs & Stratton armature without just replaceing it to see if you start getting a spark?
Thanks in advance!!!
Chuck

If your engine has breaker points, make sure to check flywheel key also to make sure it isnt sheared??

unhook the sparkplug wire and check the resistance from the wire to ground--should be about 2-3 kohms---too high and you may have an open--if resistance is way low the coil is shorted

Actually, it won't start. I am not getting any spark. I cleaned the contacts on the armature and the magnets on the flywheel and set the armature gap at 10,000's, but still no fire. I also unhooked the ground wire to see if the ignition switch was shorting out but still no fire. The only other thing that I can think of is the armature coil is shorting out. Can you think of anything that I missed?
Thanks,
Chuck

If you have a new enough engine that it is magnetron ignition and you have unhooked the ground wire and still have no fire, then you have a bad coil. You have put a new plug in it first, I assume? If you have a new plug, no fire, then replace coil.

Do you have the newer ignition "armature", with the built-in magnetron electronic igntion, or does your engine still have breaker points?

Incidently, cleaning the rust off the magnets and coil pole-pieces is not necessary unless there is enough build-up of rust that there is physical contact (read... they rub) between the coil polepieces and the flywheel. Only when there is contact, does the rust bother the magnetic field.

A Stumper:

I have tried the different methods given to me through postings, but none have been successful so far. There is apparently something I have overlooked. Here is the what I have taken care of so far on my B&S Riding Lawnmower, 12 HP:

(1) Replaced the block
(2) Set the flywheel on with a new shear pin
(3) Put a new armature on, setting appropriate clearance
(4) Checked all safety switches, i.e., seat, clutch, mower engagement
(5) Put in new spark plug
(6) Used vice grips to fasten spark plug to side of engine, turned over engine, but still no spark.

What have I overlooked?

P.S. I have to get this running because I'm knee-deep in Blue Grass!

Thank you!
