I am thinking about puting a 327 chevy v8 in a old cub cadet garden tractor. I dont think it would be too hard to do. I could probaly change the tranny and cut down a old 8.8 inch mustang rear end. I think the cub was a 1961 or 2. 7 hp. Please help.

It seems to me that a small block Chevy in a Cub Cadet has already been done , at least I remember seeing pictures of one but do not know if the tractor ran. A few years back at the Little Guys Show in Manchester , Pa. (a show for garden tractors only) a guy had a Cub Cadet with 4 cylinder Subaru engine and I did see this tractor move under it's own power. Short framed garden tractors with powerfull engines makes for a deadly combination , my 1963 Wheel Horse with a 7 hp diesel flipped me right off the tractor in a tractor pull and I had not pulled the throttle all the way yet!

Years ago I went to an auction where someone had put a 350 engine and automatic transmission into a Farmall F20. I remember a fella climbing on it, putting it in gear and literally shooting over fifty feet across the yard in no time. THANK GOD AND SEVERAL ANGELS for that particular area not having any people in it. As fast as that outfit traveled no one could have gotten out of the way. The very shaken fella shut the tractor off and quickly got off it. Point... STUPID actions make breeding grounds for potential tragic outcomes. Now about your idea. As R. Bedell asks so do I. "WHY?" Just because you can and again if you are going to end up with as misfit said with only the hood ornament... "WHY?" To ruin a good little garden tractor for such a project is ridiculous. If you are that set and feel that you are that talented why don't you make your own frame and everything else? Ask around about the Pow'r Pup garden tractor from the era of 1960-61. Now the creator of that little tractor not only had talent ... HE put it to practical use.

I put a 409 chevy in mine --but all I had left of the cub cadet was the hood ornament

We already KNEW that. Still don't know about the engineering quality of the Pow'r Pup... do you?
Oh well as said by others before.... what you are doing has been done before, by others. Isn't anything new or truly creative... just doing it because... If you wanted to do then why did you ask?

Science & Mechanics magazine August & September 1961 issues. It is called in the title Suburban tractor and in the article it is called the Pow'r Pup.

Okay, I hope this works. The first site is Vintage plans and shows a lot of little tractors. The next site I got by scrolling down. It truly should be the Pow'r Pup site complete with prints. I apologize for being so abrupt earlier only I could tell someone with your potential is quite capable of actually building a modern version of this little tractor. Think of Chevette rear end for a start. I've talked to people that have actually seen a working real Pow'r Pup. They remember tremendous pulling power. The other tractors would be fun to build also only I think you could actually be someone with the talent to do this. If you should do so for gosh sakes let me know. My Dad was going to build this for us as kids. Unfortunately the book got tossed and he never found a copy. I finally found a copy on ebay about three years ago. p,s, Keep in touch if you build this fella.

I think i will take the cub and cut down a chevy rearend and put a powerglide tranny in and leathen the frame put the 327 in, and see how it works.

Try a version of the Pow'r Pup frame. May be a little easier to work with. Plus the hood would be easier to form around your engine. I'd modify the Pup's front pivot area for the extra engine weight. The original Pow'r Pup was painted a red with yellow wheels. The Cub steering is a little on the light side for all the weight. With proper gearing and reduction the auto may just work. One problem with an auto is controlling the power to the rear end on something that light. Thus the reduction. Before IH came out with the 7 and 806 series of farm tractors they experimented with putting a GM powerglide in their farm tractors. The tractor was so jerky upon takeoff that even with little throttle the front end would come off the ground. Just don't want to see someone get hurt or killed.

I hope this info helps. Keep us posted on progress of your project. Some of the Old Timers actually used two transmissions to get the needed gear reduction when they made Doodlebug or homemade tractors. Imagine something like that hookup. Your old Cub Cadet.

If it is a International built between 1961 and 1963 then go to this page and find the location of the serial number (it will tell you where to look) and then find out the serial number and it will tell you the year and month it was built. You may just happen to have a vry desireable LOW serial number tractor. If that is the case then let us know and we'll help you find a good home for it. Good Luck.

Installing a Small Block Chevy in a Cub Cadet is easy,But a Blown Chrysler Hemi is a little more work.
