I am looking at a Gravely Model L, with a 30" rotary mower and a sulky. I had been told that the L is geared way too fast, that I should look for the LI. Any opinions? This would be my first walk-behind.

Hey, I do agree with the person that told you that the model L is geered too fast.....However, if a sulky is available and is a feasable attachment for you, it is well worth it. I had a Model L for 30 years and cut 2 acres of thick grass with no problem using the sulky. The mower has the power to mow at the speed it is geered at, but it is quite brisk, I've walked behind it before, but the sulky is the best way to go!

I am not so sure what I am doing here but I am a Gravely collector and have several tractors and have had a lot in the past. I am currently interested in obtaining a 1952 model and wonder what it looks like. It has wooden handles and all. I wonder if there are any good books on Gravely like there are on John Deeres?? Please fill me in with whetever you can?? Thanks! Dan

I have a Gravely Model L Serial#9154 believed to be a 1942. Have some attachments. Is a bit rough but runs. Top end done a couple of years ago. First$250.00 takes it. Located in Londonderry, N.H.

I just bought one (used)from the John Deere dealership in Michigan City, In. I have also seen a couple of others on the web, so yes, they do exist and can be found. I'm not a big nascar fan, just was looking for a nice used JD lawn tractor.

all depends-- if you mow a smooth lawn, and you mow it offen, the L might not be a bad choice. It will definatly step right out. Speed is only one part of the question, power is the other. I use an LI and usually use it to mow grass which is way too high. I also do a little light "brush hoggin" and have used it to "mow" 1 inch maple trees. Just feed it easy.

Wayne, if you plan on rototilling, snowblowing,or using a rotary plow attatchment, you will need to use gear reduction wheels to slow the forward speed of the machine. I have an L-model and use it for mowing all summer, then put the gear-reduction wheels on for tilling in the late fall, snowblowing in winter, tilling again in the spring and then switch back to the regular wheels for the summer. The L-8 model Gravely has a lever to switch high and low gear ranges so you don't need to change gears by changing the wheels. By this time you probably have the machine anyway....they're lots of fun. Good Luck, KT

Wayne, It kind of depends on what your definition if way to fast is. I personally would rather mow with an LI. I have children and they leave things(toys etc) all over the place. The slower speed of the LI gives me more time to watch for any "suprises" left on the lawn. I also have many things to mow around(trees etc). I have an L that I use to mow the back area and fence lines, its speed helps to finish the job quicker. If I where you I'd try it out to see if you think it's too fast. Rich
