I am wondering if the transaxle on my 160 lawn tractor ever needs to be serviced and how? There must some oil or grease in it?

Larry,

If you're talking about a JD160 lawn tractor with the five speed Peerless transaxle, there is no maintenance required. The trans is sealed and uses a special grease called "Bentonite", which is sort of half way between gear oil and wheel bearing grease. Bentonite is formulated so that it does not "channel" around the rotating gears but instead continues to stick.

I recently rebuilt the trans in my 160. The only way to get the grease in or out is to remove the trans and split the case. Due to the stickiness of the Bentonite, I had to scoop out what I could and then scrub each part in a parts washer to get all the old grease off. In my case this was necessary due to the metal filings from several failed bushings.

The bottom line is don't worry about it and NEVER, EVER shift gears in that trans without using the clutch. Don't ask me how I know this... :-(
