Ok..

Had this mower for a while and cant seem to resolve the starting problems. It seems that using the starter drains the battery something awful. The first turn of the key results in the engine cranking slowly. It will fire but hesitate and kickback a bit. If you are lucky, it will fire and run. If it doesnt start on the first try, the starter will not turn the engine past the point of compression without a long pause and it heats up something awful

When I try the starter without the plug in, it turns and turns no problem.

Is the starter just weak? It remids me of an old Chevrolet pickup I had. The starters were too close to the headers and once it got hot, you had to wait until it cooled to start it again.

Anyone experience this?

Be sure you have a good ground path from the battery to the starter,

Sounds like the exhaust valve clearance may be to wide which will disable the decompression function causing hard cranking. Be sure the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke or ever a little after TDC will not hurt. If you do not have the engine at TDC you will not set the valve right and not solve the problem.

No, the starter brushges are OK. I had it apart today looking for trouble but couldnt find any.

I dont think this engine has ever been apart since new, so Im not sure about the valves being set.

This is a Sears 30" mower.
