12.5 Briggs I/C burns oil

I have a 12.5 HP I/C Briggs vertical shaft in a JD 111 lawn mowing tractor. Except for the inital oil fill I have always used Castrol 20W 50 and change every 25-30 hours. Total hours on engine about 800.
Engine for last year or so smokes on start up , even if I raise the front of tractor 6 inches while sitting between mowings. Does not smoke much at all after start up but need to add oil every 1 1/2 hour. Sounds good and has good power. My question is is there some way the oil is getting burned other than worn out piston rings? I changed the air filter per the dealer and that did not help. Any ideas?? Thanks.

I would probably take the head off and check the valve guides. Briggs engines are prone to having valve guides wear and needing bushing put in. If you are not experiencing any power loss, then more than likely that is the culprit. I agree with stronics, you are using too thick of an oil, you are using an oil designed for a liquid cooled engine, in an air cooled engine. An air cooled engine engine runs a lot higher tempurature than its liquid cooled counterpart, using the correct weight oil is very critical for a long engine life. If you want to run a multi vis oil, use a 10w30 synthetic. Some of the old Kohler engines have locked up and broke rods from lack of adequate lubrication using 10w30 oil in them, that is how critical the correct oil is in an air cooled engine. I personally do not run a synthetic, but a lot people use it with real good results. If you read Briggs & Strattons's directions, they will tell you to use SAE 30 when tempurature is above 32 degrees.

Your Briggs 12.5 HP is starting to get tried. The 20W-50 may have not helped. Use 30W above 40 degrees F.

First of all, this is my opinion.
20W-50 is a too heavy for that engine. 40% of engine cooling is done with the oil and it needs to flow to be effective. Standard 30W is what the factory recommends.
At this point I"d run 30W with some Marvels Mistery oil in it and hope the rings may free up. Also check the cooling fins and make sure they are not plugged up.
