brigg back compression

Hi have a 5 hp briggs when you pull on the string to start it and it will not start the compresson on the string just pulls you back in.Had the carb worked on at two different dealer and the key way does not looklike it indent in any way when you look down the key way it all lines up good.Any other thing this could be it does not start. thanks

i think i'd remove flywheel and put in new keyway anyway

If you have checked all that the others have said and it still does it check the blade for tightness.

i"d vote for sheared key. it doesnt take much. also make sure it wasnt overfilled on oil, or if the engine was laid over..either might get liquid on top of the piston. pull the plug out for an easy check.

Has anyone worked on the valves and perhaps filed a valve a little too short? This would make the compression release not work and tend to do what you are describing.

Have you REMOVED the flywheel to check the key? This is a normal symtom of a B&S engine with Magnetron solid state ignition which has a sheared flywheel key.
