My girlfriend wants me to fix starting a problem on her Lowe's (MTD) 16hp B&S riding mower.

The mower will not turn fast enough to start. The battery checks good. All connections are clean and tight.

If anyone has had a similar problem with this type mower, please give me some suggestions on troubleshooting.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

You were right-on on the starter being bad. Briggs twins are notorious for eating starters. The symptoms you describe are exact. Most of the time the problem is in the bushings inside the starter. They become worn and when voltage is applied the bushings are worn so much that the starter binds up. Unless someone is experienced at making one of these little bushings, you might as well install a new starter. Ouch!!!!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It has a bad starter. I checked the voltage at the starter and it was pulling 9 volts and smoking. The starter is now in the shop for a rebuild.

The engine is a twin cylinder with OHV.

Thanks to all for your help!

you are kinda vaque on the info you are supplying for the info you seek. You need to post ID on engine. As Kent referred to, if it is an OHV, engine, could have valves needing adjusted, we also had some issues with compression release springs breaking. What you probably have is the horizontally opposed twin, if you have that, then more than likely you have a bad starter if you have checked all the connections, have a good ground, battery is correct size, solnoid is good, starter swithc is not corroded on back of switch or all dirty. What temperature is the engine when you are trying to start? If it is cold and you are using straight 30W oil, that could be an issue, also.

What model of B&S engine? If this is an overhead valve engine, check valve clearance. Be sure you have the right, MTD, deck belt. One to short can cause hard cranking.

I would check the starter first maybe the gear on top is wore down replace gear not starter. If starter turns hard by hand replace starter. If starter is good check belts on engine pully for tightness too tight engine will not turn.Still no turn remove plugs and crank engine if turns free take to repair shop.
