This may seem like a really dumb question, but I'm going to ask anyway. I have a cub 149. I am positive that the ignition coil is bad. My question is, will any 12 volt coil work, provided that it is also used with points? In other words, can I take a coil from a 4 cylinder and use it on my single cylinder Kohler engine? Thanks.

Thanks guys. I had a couple of old coils laying around from old ford tractors that I knew were good. Just trying to save a few bucks. The local cub dealer wants $47.00 for a new coil.

You will find a better price by going directly to Kohler. You will need: 41-519-21-S

The others are correct. Use the right coil for good point life. The dwell chacteristics of this single-cylinder engine are different than those of a multi-cylinder car engine, and require a matching coil.

I don't know what a Kohler place could get you a coil for, but they're cheaper at Deere than what you were quoted:

Part # AM132453, @ $32.03.

Lumpy,
You shouldn't try a coil not for Kolher engines as they draw too much current and will ruin the points, I've seen them melt the plastic.
The built in resistor limits the current through the coil hence the points too.

For testing purposes, I suspose any 12V coil will work to eliminate a spark probelm. HOWEVER, Kohler coils have an internal resistor to match their ignition system and it is best to use the specified and recommended coil for longevity.
