If you run that heavy oil especially in the cold, your hydraulic lifters won't work. It will rattle like crazy. JD sells stuff called "break in oil". It's technically designed for diesels, but works well in the gas engines as well. Run it hard for 15-20 hours and then change the oil.

I think 15-40 is far too heavy for your small engine. 15-40 Rotella is a fine oil but more practical for a deisel engine in fact I think it is too heavy for modern car engines. Jack

For the engines I rebuild Castrol HD 30 weight is used. After a rebuild I will run a engine for 10 minutes then change the oil , then run the engine for an hour and change the oil again. This gets all the small metal particles out of the block that might have been missed while cleaning during a rebuild. Oil is cheap compared to metal.

There is really no break in oil used in the Kohler engines. Use the oil recommended in the book as was suggested earlier. Change it after 5-10 hours, then put back in the recommended oil. A lot of guys have been using Mobil 1 Synthetic oil with real good luck, but the first 5-10 hours I would use regular oil as per the Kohler book.

I'd wouldn't use anything but CC or IH low ash 30W. David

I would use the oil Recommended in your Kohler KT Service Manual TC-2107-C as indicated on page 8.
