...on a 1997 Yard machine mower?

I found one that has the 20.5hp opposed twin, and has the variable drive, with 2 speed (hi-lo) rear drive.

It came with a 46" 3 bladed deck, but the ceck is rotted out. No rust on frame, or tin, or motor, motor turns over but doesn't start ( no fuel, its been sitting for a while)

I had a 19.5hp Briggs twin years back, and was moderatly pleased with it, the crapsman frame it was on didnt help either.

Anyways, is anyone familiar with this platform, engine or mower. is it reliable, tough?

It has at least 23-9.50-12 tires in the back.

He wants 50 bucks for it, think it is worth it?

Tractor is not worth much more than that.MTD changed decks with any model/year change. Trying to find a good deck may be the challenge, This is not a real reliable tractor, the vari drive system is a pain to change belts on, and the belts can wear pretty quick with a lot of use. Is not a real tough tractro, frame and tranny is too light for much except mowing. As for engine, see the other post, he pretty wells sums it up.

The 20.5 had a problem with valve sets coming out after the first year, some could be repaired and stayed in others would come loose again. If the engine has compressionand you want to put a little time and some money in it $50 is not bad.Good Luck..... ..... .
