I was just recently given an old Poulan Alternator/Generator from the late 70's. It has a 5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine model # 130232. As old as this generator is it had never been started. I put gas in it for the first time and replaced the oil. It fired right up and works fine but the motor surges. If I adjust the needle valve in I can get it to run smooth but the RPMs are really high and I think it is running too lean at that point. I ended up having to replace the air filter as well because it falling apart. Unfortunately I had already started it so I don't know if something got sucked into the carburetor even though it was surging from the start. Any ideas what I might look for to fix the surging. I know this is not for a garden tractor, but I have had great luck with my 8N on that forum so I thought I would give it a try. Thanks

Matt

The 130200 series motors usually ran a pulsa-jet carb. The earlier post was right. It's probably the diaphram. You can also do it one better and install an entire carb kit. B & S kit #495606 should have everything you need to get it back to new and running smooth.

I picked up a carb kit this morning, but I looked at the diaphram last night and could not see any holes or tears. What kind of damage usually causes the diaphram to not work properly?

Matt

The diaphrams can also lose their elasticity and dry out. When they go bad, it won't pump any fuel or it may run eratically.

hold the old diaphram up to bright light and flex it
on bad ones you can see the damage usually around the metal edge

either doesn't pump the gas up to that shelf properly or leans out the mixture, so I've been told

Well I couldn't really see any holes in it, but I cleaned out the carb with air and carb cleaner and put the new diaphragm in it and it's running real good now.

Thanks for the help

Matt

whoever designed that carb was a sharp guy

no float, no needle and seat, nice big openings

open up a tecumseh carb full of gunk sometime

if you have one of those pumper carbs, might want to put a new diaphram in it
