My older nieghbor and I sorta have the same mowers, mine is a hydro from the big box store with a 17 1/2 Kohler and his is a manual 2005 model with a 17 1/2 hp Briggs. He ask me a while ago to listen to the engine at a fast idle, I did and it definitly has the sound of a diesel engine. The noise seems to come from the top end. He has already taken it back to the Deere store and they of course said there was not any thing wrong. He is 74 yrs young and worried crazy about this noise. Is the noise normal? Does he need a higher octane gas? Any advise would be appreciated. Richard H.

Many of the single cylinder briggs sound like this at idle. Noise goes away or quiets with increased RPM. Never seen one fail because of it.

Now, if it's the other way around (noise gets worse with increased RPM), you need to have it looked at.
