Amp meter in Neg Nos

I just got a new, but older Gravely mower with a Kolher Command 20 engine (model no. CV20S). When the motor is running, the amp meter reads slightly in negative No.s and when the mower (electric clutch) is engaged the amp meter drops to about minus 8 or so.

Can this be from a bad battery? The battery does seem iffy.

Can anyone tell me how to test the output of the electrical system (which wire to the rectifier/regulator to put the probe to, RPMs to run at and what the output in amps and volts should be)? Manual for engine says it has a 15 amp stator.

Thanks.

Sounds like the "classic" regulator/rectifier failure?? If the reg/rectifier is the type with 3 terminals in a row, the two outer ones are the AC output from the stator (30 volts ac +-) the center one is the B+ which is usually around 14 to 15 volts DC at 3600 rpm probe with meter on dc scale there first, make sure you check output on stator also on your ac meter setting. Last but not least check for any blown fuses, corroded wires, etc. FULLY CHARGE battery before performing any of the tests or replacing reg/rectifier A half charged battery is HARD on the regulator/rectifier
