Acids will attack the crank. Lye will disolve aluminum but will not hurt the crank.

Ken, I have been using muratic acid for years and it has never "attacked" a crank. The only thing muratic acid will do is remove all the oils off the steel, so it will flash rust real quick.
It will dissolve aluminum though and does a great job, it is slow, but it cleans it up.

All I can say is that I use it to remove rust from parts and if left in the tank for too long, steel parts are pitted. The longer they are left, the worse it gets.

If you have aluminum built up on the rod throw, you may need to have the crank turned .010 undersized. I would take it to an automotive machine shop to have it checked out. I have a crank from a K-301 in the shop now. It would not clean at 10 under. They are welding the throw up and will grind it back to standard.

Dean,
If you go to a local radiator shop, see if they will sell/give you a little bit of muratic acid 6-7 oz is more than enough. Muratic acid will remove aluminum slowly, but it will not hurt the steel. It will super clean it, all oil off of it, so you do not want to remove the aluminum and then walk away, ti will flash rust immeidatly. It takes a lot of time to do it this way, so ne patient and use in a well ventilated area, it stinks to high heaven.
