i had the 12hp koehler engine single cyl rebuilt about 3 yrs ago i disassembled the whole tractor repainted it finally the other day i get it fired up i had it actually running 3 times that lasted about 10 seconds each i had to pour gas into the spark plug hole to get it running . i assume the carb needs cleaned or rebuilt might be plugged up with something after 3 yrs. it was on the engine the whole time but without the air cleaner on it.but here is the problem after the 3rd run it barely wants to turn over. if i take out the spark plug it rolls right over again. i can actually take my finger while its cranking over very fast without the spark plug in it . put my finger in the hole and stop the engine from rolling over. it acts like the compression is trapped inside the cylinder does this make sence to anyone here thanks RICK

Check the clearance on the exhaust valve. If you set the clearance wrong you will disable the decompression release that is active during cranking. When I set the exhaust valve clearance I always have the piston slightly after top dead center at the end of the compression stroke/beginning of the power stroke.

You don't say how long you cranked the engine each time to get it started. After starting the engine three times and never replenishing the charge in your battery, you will have exhausted the reserve. This may indicate a weak battery. I suggest that you have that checked.
As you know, I have already sent you electrical diagrams and offered other electrical suggestion(s), again this problem goes back and points to an "electrical issue". Re-examine your electrical circuits.

As for running 10 seconds and dumping fuel in, it is a "FUEL DELIVERY" problem. As stated by previous posters, check the Carb and if your tractor has one, check the Fuel Filter. Also, in the gas tank is a Fuel Screen to the inlet of the shut off valve. You may want to see of that is clean & clear also.

LDJ is correct. Them old Kohler cast iron one lungers turn over hard. If any thing in your electrical circuit is weak, that will be a problem. As for your carb, take it off, and soak it in sea foam for a few days.

Sounds like you have stuck exhaust valve.

being hard to turn over is probably electrical, either bad battery, starter, solenoid,ie something in electrical. If a valve sticks it will stick open and you will have no compression. Valves can't stick closed except for sitting for a long time and they can rust in the closed position. In that case you couldn't turn the engine over without something tearing up and you would know that for sure.

For the fuel problem, take the carb off and clean it up. It's probably gas turned to varnish and has it all stopped up.
