A vey common problem on Tecumseh engines are the valve gap is too wide, it needs to be set at .004 on the OHV engines. If the valve clearance is not set at .004, the compression release will not work, and then it will kick back agaisnt the starter like you are descibing.

i was reading in another forum about the valve clearence being to tight and the intake opening sooner than it should thus causing the engine to "kick" stop over at www.lawnmowercentral.net one of the guy's there may have answers as well.

Flywheel key does not bend--it shears off. Caused by a backfire, loose flywheel nut, sudden stop of engine rotation due to broken connecting rod! On a rotary lawn mower, hitting the water or gas curb box, or a pipe hidden by weeds or long grass, which stops the engine quickly, will definitely shear the flywheel key! Note: when you put the engine back together again, pay strict attention to the timing marks on cam and crankshaft gears, and also to getting the governor in correctly! Its a bit tricky getting it all back in where its supposed to go!
