Have a Murry with a bad Briggs 12 hp vertical shaft. Found a 12 hp Briggs IC today that looks like it would fit on it. Only problem is the wireing. The present engine has two wires, a red and black coming from the engine and going to the ignition. This replacement engine has only a red wire. Anyone know how to make this work so my battery will charge?

Thanks, Think I got it. Just used the one wire to charge the battery. The black wire on the original engine was to power the lights. Just won't have any lights with this engine.

The red wire is normally the wire to connect to charge the battery. When connected this wire should have a in-line fuse to protect the alternator stator if someone install the battery backwards. The black wire could be the wire you ground to kill the engine by grounding out the mag. Some of the newer B&S engines have this wire come out more near the front of the engine.
