I have a delco 1101970 6g49 starter/generator on an old wards garden tractor that starts fine but does not charge the battery. It has a vo;tage regulator but I don't think it is hooked up correctly. When running I don't get any voltage from the generator post or around the regulator. Should'nt there be current out of the starter/generator? I don't want to buy a new regulator if I am not getting current to begin with.

I just check the charging voltage on my Wards tractor. The model nuber is 33048C with hydrostaic drive and hydraulic lift. With the
engine running at an idle the charging voltage
taken at the "A" post was 12.7 vdc and at a fast idle it was 13.9-14.1 vdc. No voltage present on this post when engine is off. Hal
PS: If you want a copy of the wiring email me.

I have the hour meter wire connected to the "A"
post on the generator. It only has voltage when the engine is running. That's the post closest to the engine block. Take a volt meter and see if you have voltage there when the engine is running. Your generator may not have any voltage output. Hal

There should be voltage from one of those posts.
I have an hour meter hooked up on my tractor and I have the wire connected to the post that only has voltage when the engine is running. I will have to look and post on here later today. Hal

I have one of those Wards garden tractor's that I bought new in 1971 and I'm still using it. My parts list manual has the white wire to the "F"
terminal, blue wire to "Bat" that's the center terminal and the orange wire to "L" terminal. I can email you a copy of this wiring diagram if you want it. Hal from MD

Most generator regulator have three terminals, some have four. You need atlest three connected to make the system work. The field treminal of the regulator, sometimes marked FLD, Needs to be connected to the F terminal on the generator. The armature terminal, sometimes marked ARM, needs to be connected to the A terminal on the generator which is also the the terminal that the wire from the startr solenoid is connected. The positive side of the battery need to be connected to the battery terminal of the regulator, normally marked BAT. Some regulators have a terminal marked L which is a source of power for the light circuit.

The generator will have two terminals, "A", and "F". Ground the "F" terminal to "full-field" the generator, and see if it charges. If it does, then it's a voltage regulator or wiring problem.

One thing to look for... the regulators or usually rubber-mounted, with a braided copper jumper wire making the ground connection around the rubber. If that ground wire is broken or missing, and the regulator isn't grounded, the generator won't charge.

Thank you all VERY much in reply to Bob, 05-02-2006 21:58:22
I rewired the system like Bob said and tested like El Toro described and it's up and running now. The amp gauge "wanders" but at least it is keeping the battery up. Some one had wired around the key switch and swapped wires on the regulator for some reason. Thank you all again

Thanks Bob
I"ll try that. Is there any way to get a wiring diagram for the voltage regulator? The regulator has 3 post but only 1 is used and I get no juice anywhere except the terminal for the starter while cranking. I looked at the starter/gen and all the wires, brushes, bearings, and comutator look good
