Hello all. My dad has a Monkey Wards tiller we repowered with a small 5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton. Probably about 5 years old. I can get model numbers if you want. It"ll run until the carb floods itself with fuel and then the engine will die. Let it set for awhile and it"ll eventually drain back down. I haven"t delt too much with engines that flood themselves, just ones that starve because they"re plugged up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well it got dark here so this project is on hold. If dad or I go to town tomorrow I'll make sure we get a new gasket at least. The diaphram itself looks in good shape but i'll grab another one and see if that helps. also gonna try blowing out the pickup screen more, and I'll do as you suggest about the needle. And cleaning out the tank sounds good too. its a decent sized tank and it looks like they pull fuel up into the carb and spit it out into a smaller bowl at the top of the tank before it goes into the carb. that was full of crap when I got the carb off so that will get fixed too.

stay tuned for updates i guess? thanks everyone.

You might try changing the carburator diaphram which is under a little plate on the side of carburator. Take special note of the parts inside (spring) and put it back on the correct side of the rubber diaphram.

Take out the float, and set it in a coffee can with 3 inches or so of gasoline. Let it float overnight. If you find it sunk by morning--there"s your trouble! Any water that is in yer fuel, even a small amount, will freeze in the carb over the winter, which will break the float! Rustyj

is it a float carb or a diaphram? was the engine sitting for a while?

There is no float, it is a diaphram type carburator. After cleaning out every orifice I could with compressed air, that still didn't help so I went ahead and pulled the carb off the tank. There are two screens on it, one on a pickup tube, and another one i'm not exactly sure what its for, but I cleaned them both out really good and I'm gonna have to get a new gasket tomorrow. Apparently that one was shot.

And yes, it has been sitting for awhile but I thought dad said it either had no gas in it when he went to use it, or he ran it out of gas. Either way, whats in the tank now is fresh gasoline.

O.K.: In the place where the side plate goes on, there are some holes that get plugged up. any water in the carb will also mess it up. Like somebody else said, be sure you get the spring and washer on the correct side of the gasket. If this carb has the large square fuel tank, you must fill it to full the first time so that fuel gets into the smaller portion of the tank, so the fuel pump can pull fuel up to the carb. If it has the smaller tank, this can be omitted. Also take out the needle valve and the part it goes into, then blow it all out. but, watch for any teeny parts that might blow out! Some carb cleaner, or laquer thinner will help with the cleaning! Rustyj

Well sorry about the delay everybody. Some other stuff had to come up, and since it rained for a few days in a row, tiller wasn't needed. Anyways, I cleaned all the screens out, as well as the bowl in the top of the gas tank, and put it all back together tonight. Started it up and it ran pretty good and never flooded. So in a week when it floods again, I'll change the diaphram on the pump and see if that fixes it! :)

Thanks for all your guys' help. Y'all take er easy.
