I have a 6hp briggs engine on a troy built tiller that has me scratching my head. It runs great at any speed above idle. But if you slow it all the way down it will surge and idle eratically. If I reach down behind the air filter and hold the carb linkage it will idle fine but goes back to surging as soon as you let go. Is somthing out of adjustment? Mike.

Sounds like a lean idle mixture. Does it have a idle mixture screw that you could adjust. These newer carbs are set so lean you can have these problems.

Sounds like the governor is doing its thing! Thats how they work! They keep the engine from racing or shutting down, until you apply more throttle, then the governor does its thing at the higher speed that you set. Thats why you hear the engine speeding up a little bit, then slowing down again! don't mess with it!
