I have a 226 with Onan 16 HP engine that is about 12 years old. The past 2 years during hot weather, I have been having problems with losing power, tractor stalling, and then not wanting to restart until it cools down. Dealer suggested that it was vapor locking and to install insulation around fuel line. Done that, didn't help. Someone else suggested that it sounded like a warped exhaust valve. Anybody else have any ideas before I invest in an overhaul?

I would replace the gas cap. Sounds to me like vapor lock. What happens is your fuel pump can't keep up with the suction that is being created because your cap is plugged. This causes a lean gas mixture which causes your engine to run hot. With your engine temp increasing your carb and fuel lines are also increasing to a boiling point and your engine snubs. As it cools the pressure in your tank decreases and your can run again. Replace the cap, wrap the gas line with foil.

Mark,Try moving the coil to a cooler location on the tractor. Failing that try a new coil in a cooler location.

The Onan engines when they get some hours on them require the valves to be adjusted. This can be done with a valve job. What happens is when the engine gets hot the valves expand and don't have the right clearance not letting them seal properly. So the engine probably doesn't need an overhaul and the valve job can probably be done in the tractor.
