My steering makes a racheting sound and only partially turns to the right. M00STXB183582 serial # - was told by JD dealer is a 1993 model - manual tranny. Deck is yellow. Told to drop the deck and pull steering shaft out from below. Most likely gear is stripped. I imagine nuts/bolts/etc. are metric? Any other info would be appreciated.

Usually much easier to remove the fuel tank and steering pedestal than to pull everything from below on those. Have him copy the related pages from the service manual for you, as thats how it is shown in my service manual.

That pedestal is what holds the gears and steering shaft, and is a weak point and breaks, causing similar problems. If yours is painted green, its probably the old one. If its black, then it should be the new updated one. An updated replacement is available from Deere that reduces the chance of future breakage.

Or, you could just have worn gears and bushings. Its still easier to do from the top in my opinion.
