I have an older B&S 8 hp vertical engine model 190702
that I would like to replace the rings in to see if it would
smoke less, use less oil. The piston ring end gap now
is .080. Does anyone know which over-size rings, .010, .020, .030 to use and what the specs call for the ring end
gap to be?
Thanks

Thanks everyone for the replys. I got standard rings and they checked around .020 which is a lot better than the .080 that I had so I am going to try them. It seems the aluminum bore had worn less than the rings. If I had gotten .010 over size then my readings would have been around .010? .020 - .010 = .010

.010 rings would need lots of filing to get them to fit. They would be way too big. .020 is not bad at all. .030 would be getting to the limit for new rings in that engine IMO.

B&S P/N 299569 . This is an old part number and may have been superseaded.

So the rings wear more than the bore does and
standard rings would probably be ok? When I check them what should the end gap be? I have
not been able to find any information on this.
Thanks

A general rule of thumb is .003" end gap per inch of cylinder bore size.

Example: A 3" diameter cylinder bore should have .009" ring end gap. ....A 4" bore should have have .012" end gap.

The actual end gap is not critical, but should be close to the rule of thumb. ... A + or - tolerance of .002" will not adversely affect operation of your B&S engine.

to do it right u need to start with a standard set of rings an check the ring gap at 3 positions in the bore top middle bottom using new rings
the rings are worn much more than the bore you will be suprised

if you have too much gap with std rings you will need to bore the engine.you see,the bore doesnt wear the same from top to bottom.with 010rings, say you file rings and get .010 gap at top, then at bottom of cylinder there may be no gap. so 99.9% of the time ,use std rings in std bore, lucas
