I heard this rumor from a lawn equipment dealer that MTD will be installing Chinese built engines on all of their lawn mowers for 2007. Anyone else heard this?

Yeah, and i also heard those Chinese engines will have slanted spark plugs! especially the 2 cylinder ones. And the labels will be printed in Mandarin dialect, since nobody reads the labels when they are printed in English! Rustyj

I can go to the local Wally-World right now and buy a MTD push mower with a Chinese built engine. I am going there tonight and can get the stock number if you like.

And this concerns me HOW? in reply to Boyd in Mn, 06-05-2006 23:53:03
I use a 1965 IH 424 diesel utility with a finishing mower to mow large areas at the farm, and a Deere 120, a 317, and a 400 to mow smaller areas, and the yard at the house in town.

Any one of these will outlast any of the newer $#&* by a factor of 10-to-1, and as long as parts remain available for the old ones, for the occasional problem, WHO NEEDS the modern "tin cans" they sell as "lawn tractors"!

Heck, the old ones are so "modern" they even have adjustable carburetors!

Don't S'prise ME None... in reply to Boyd in Mn, 06-05-2006 23:53:03
Wouldn't surprise me. In the world of small motorcycles, a Chinese manufacturer called Lifan has bought the OE tooling from some 90 to 150 cc Honda motorcycle engines and transmissions, and they're being sold on eBay right now. [Just go to eBay and type "LIFAN" into the search window and see what comes up.] Word is, since they use Honda's original tooling, you can get replacement parts from a Honda dealer.

In fact, they're also making a clone to the Yamaha 250cc V-Twin engine and transmission. So it wouldn't surprise me if the Chinese made a deal to supply some air-cooled engines to some American OE lawn mower manufacturers.

You will know it is Chinese made when you open the box and find a "fortune cookie" in side....LOL

In all seriousness, if the American buying public were not to buy or stop buying these products, the foreign products won't appear here. A general rule of business is not to sell something there is no demand for. That would be the loudest bell for Manufacturer's to hear. If you can figure a way to accomplish that, then the problem will be solved.

Well good luck, it seems that all of the American Manufacturers are farming all of the work to other countries. If you will do some checking B&S went to doing this several years ago. The only truly American Made Motor nowadays is the Kohler. God Bless American Made Products and the Companies that make them.

David,
Don't wanna bust your bubble, but some of the Kohler engines are made by Yamaha, the only true American made engine I am aware of is Tecumseh, and they could be part foreign, I don't know. I know Briggs is using Diahatsu in their line up of engines.

Not just in Tractors and engines. And it"s not the complete fault of the consumer. Our Fed government and CEO"s of MOST manufacturers have been selling us down the river for decades. Look at GM. It has been shrinking since the 70"s. Their executives continue to get astounding raises and bonus"s for their "success". Corporate cost-cutting is now considered success, instead of growing and expanding the business. I remember the first Honda coup...it was laughed at!! Who"s laughing now, as Toyota and other asian mfr"s get closer to squeezing out the US automakers. (end of rant)

Dunno about that, but I've noticed the local Pep Boys auto parts store is stocking more Chicom junk than before, including generators and pumps, all with Chicom engines.

They even stock several horizontal and vertical shaft replacement engines that were made in China.

If you will look closely all of the Chinese Junk that is in Autozone and O'Reillys along with all the other major mass marketing stores says it is rebuilt. BULL!!! I happen to know for a fact that most of it is new just packaged in boxes to say rebuilt so they can avoid the tariffs for new products. The best way is to boycott these places and not buy their products for it is putting Americans out of Work.

Boyd,
I don't know about that, but I do know a lot of the MTD mowers do have an engine on them that you buy parts from MTD dealers and factory because they cannot be bought from any where else.

Wouldn"t surprise me in the least. What the he**, with our so called business leaders selling us down the river to maximize their profits (meaning their million dollar salary/bonuses),the Chinese will own us in about 10 to 15 years. Think I"m kidding?

HAH!! they already own a major part of all the big companies in this country. Along with the Saudi's and the other people who would as soon kill Americans as look at us. Most of the electronic parts made for new cars is made in overseas sweat shops. Good Luck.

The briggs Vanguard series are all foreign made, and very good engines. I have 4 of them. I also have 3 Kawasaki 12.5hp vertical shaft engines (FB460V) which is maybe the best mower engine the industry has seen in the last 20 years. I didn't mean to start anything that might sound racist here. I also have a Kohler 16 V-twin, 4 tecumseh snow engines and other misc USA made engines.

Has anyone else heard this rumor?
