My '77 sears 14/6 stopped charging the other day. I went to take the shroud off to check the magneto, but apparenly you have to remove the engine to accomplish this. Is there anything else I can check and eliminate as a problem before I take the motor off? It has the 14 horse Techumseh overhead valve engine

I know what a diode looks like on a car, but what about this one?

Your charging system lies under the flywheel. The first thing I would check is the Diode. It should be located outside on the frame of the engine. If all else fails you will need to pull the engine and check the Stator which is under the flywheel. Good Luck.
