Pull start wont start

Got my 5hp B&S rototiller (pull start) started today and it ran about 10 minutes. I shut it down and came back an hour later and it just wont start. I pulled and pulled and I finally broke the rope. After struggling with the spring, I finally got the rope fixed but it still will not start. How do I check that I'm getting spark while I'm pulling? While I had the pulling mechanism off I checked for loose wires or anything looking burnt, but found nothing abnormal. Any ideas?
Thanks

Does it kick back when pulling it over? If so you have a sheared flywheel key (so you would see spark but it"s not timed right). That may be why the rope broke as well. Easy to check spark - remove plug and lay it on the cylinder head. Make sure it"s grounded and make sure your in a poorly lighted area.

Hey Doug: I picked up a handy little tool for checking the spark. Its called an In-Line Spark Tester. Hooks to plug on one end and the wire on the other end. Found it at Harbour Freight Tools.

I have the same problem as you right now. I have an old two wheel walk behind Waterloo with a sickle bar on the front. I used it to cut the weeds and since I finished it will not start. I have a lot of fire but can't figure out why it won't start.

The engine is a 4.0 HP Clinton made between 1949 and 1954 but usually runs reeeeeal good.

Any ideas as to why it won't start.

Many times an engine that runs fine, then doesn't start after its been used and turned off, its because of a stuck valve. As long as you still have spark, and its getting fuel. Common on some older engines.
