Have an 11hp Snapper ride on that was given to me this early spring. The thing ran fine last summer as I remember using it to help a friend keep his lawn under control while he was in the hospital. He ended up giving me the machine as a return favor, but haven't managed to get it to run ever since. Have already changed jet's and carb, checked the flywheel key and tried a new plug. It has electronic ignition so no point's to check here. It crank's over fine but all I get is huge backfires through the exhaust with a bit of firing in between, like it want's to go but can't quite for some reason? Want to check for a sticking exhaust valve next but not sure how to do so? Any suggestion's from you experianced wrenches out there?

Had this same problem.Pulled the head and had a valve seat drop down so the valve wouldn't close all the way, reseated the valve seat, worked great, happened again, this time pulled the flywheel and the flywheel key was shot, replaced flywheel key and now my Ranch King is running great.Hope this will help.I'm no mechanic, just a plain ole city boy learning to fix these things on my own.

Make sure fuel is less than 30 days old and double check that spark plug

Thank's guy's. And will do as suggested soon as I find the time? Going to try a new plug first, before pulling anything apart just yet? And the gas I just filled in before attempting to fire her up the other day, so this shouldn't be the problem. I'm thinking, if I get lucky it'll just be the plug? If not however? Gonna yank the head and check on the valves next, I guess? Seem's to be plenty spark and gas, so a stuck exhaust valve could quite easily be the culprit, I would think?

Well pulled the head and saw that both valves worked just fine. Key has been replaced with a new one and it's not the culprit either. Finally spoke to the guy that gave me the machine in the first place and he admitted to having taken off the original carb before giving it to me with a non-tested replacement carburater in place. Pretty much insures it's the new carb causing all the trouble, so going to be consentrating on this next. Have already replaced rhe replacement carb with one I got used from the local shop. No quarentee's it wasn't junk when I got it as they'd just givin me the thing for free, just to get me and my old junk outa their hair, it seemed to me? Changed jet's in it so far. And also installed new choke and throttle linkages along with a new govenor spring, as the old one had been bent so often they didn't seem to be adjustable any longer and the old spring was all sprung out.
