I am interested in old tractors and go to many shows.....I am disabled and can mot stand or walk..... so I bought this 682 Cadet to ride the showes, my electric wheelchair wont go to well off road and wont last all day.....

The problem is I cant get it started....since we unloaded it I got it running about 3 times out of 25 trys....I expected to have repairs to make...The check valves in the tranny were leaking.....I replaced them @ $125 ea.....It has a twin, Series 2 Kohler engine....Ok now I need it to start and run....I cant walk back....I didnt expect engine trouble....new points and plugs didnt help..... I checked compression after all this cranking and starter fluid I expect the cyl. walls are washed clean of oil....low compression, 80 on one 85 on the other.....what can I do except a over haul.....How much would a overhaul cost?..... .I know this is not good and I generly dont do things half assed, but what if I honed the walls, with new rings and laped in the valves? Or had a valve job done..... .let me hear.....Don

JT, R Bedell and Rustyj14..... .I am going to answer your questions....

#1 have not tried prinning with gas, but have used starter fluid....not even a pop, nothing...removed carb. checked float, its fine no dents or holes ...needle and seat moved freely...

#2 Fresh fuel...fuel pump puts out small blips as i crank....

#3 held spark plugs in my fist, could feel spark in both plugs...

#4 iT ROLLS OVER BUT WONT START, NOT EVEN A BLIP....

#5 The color of the rear end is black...

#6 inside of carb was clean...

#6 removed gas cap....

Should I put a kit in the carb. while I have it off ? Ill try oil in the cyl when I get it back togeather...

Can I buy it on line ? three dealers in my area...none sell Kohler parts... neares parts is 35 miles...

Thanks a lot guys Don

From what you describe, it sounds like an electrical issue as opposed to a fuel issue.

Have you tried the obvious..?? Plugs, points, & condenser...???

Plugs - RV15YC4 Champion
Points - #KH-47-150-03
Condenser - #KH-52-755-13

Plug Gap = .035"
Point Gap = .020"

The Cub Cadet 82 Series is the production the IH sold off. Part of the 82 were IH and part was CCC (div of MTD). The red rear ends were IH built, and the black ones were CCC built.

The 82 Series is one of the best series that IH Cub Cadet ever made. Sorry you are having problems with yours. I have 782 and I love it.

YOU SAID...you used starter fluid and it still wouldn't run. If it won't run on starter fluid, putting a carb kit in it would cure the problem.

Parts can be obtained from your local CC or Case-IH dealer(s). On line dealers are many to include:

You are getting your self all upset and are trying to look a wat tooooo far into the problem. At 80-85 pounds compression, that is good on a flat head engine. What have you tried to do to start it. Have you tried priming into the carb itself? There is a real good possibility you might have some fuel issues, these are normally easy starting engines. Take a plug out and check to make sure you have fire to the plugs, has this been sitting out side? did you drain all the fule out and start with fresh fuel? These have gauges in them new and when they come aprt, they are a water funnel and will get water in the gas and all you need is a drop in each cylinder and no matter what you do, it will NOT run. So, I would check fire, drain and clean fuel system and see what happens there.

When you say "you can't get it started", does that mean it rolls over and won't start OR does that mean it won't roll over...??

To determine the age of your 682, what is the color of the Rear End... Red or Black..???

First off, make sure the fuel is fresh, not last years product! then clean the carburetor by taking off the fuel bowl, checking for gummy in the passages, use carburetor cleaner, or laquer thinner. Look for any small holes clogged by dirt, or gummed fuel. Also look for a carb float that doesn't float! A carb left to sit outside all winter gets condensation in the bowl chamber, which freezes hard, compresses the float, and it doesn't float! Also keep the breather hole in the gas cap open--Mud wasps like to lay their eggs in there, then plug the hole with "mud", until the egg hatches! and that keeps the fuel from flowing to the carb and engine! Using a squirt oil can, put some engine oil in each cylinder, to help the rings to seal. don't get into an overhaul, until you find out if it will stay running. Clean out the fuel tank, and delivery line-s, make sure you have spark! HTH: Rustyj
