I have a 318 and when I turn the switch to start the blades they dont turn. It slowly kept getting worse and worse. I would have to pull the belt and then it would start to work. I tried that and it still wont start running the blades. Does that sound like the main front clutch? or has anyone had a similar problem?? Thanks to those who reply.

Randy's right on the money. I had the same problem with my 430. If you turned on the lights the clutch wouldn't engage. there wasn't enough magnetism to pull it shut. It finally wouldn't work at all. I did just what Randy said and now it works like a top every time. Its a 1984, first year made, and had probably never been adjusted.

What you could try is to adjust the clutch. If you look at the sides of the clutch you'll see three slots with adjusting nuts near by, the ones with light springs behind them. You can see the clutch behind these slots. With a feeler guage tighten the adjustment nut until you get .016 - .018 clearance on the clutch surface. You'll need to go around to all three a few times to get them consistant. Another simpler way is to give each of the three nuts 1/4 turn each and see if it works, not as accurate but will tell you if you're on the right track.

Clutch facing is worn out usually? Replacement is usually the only option as there are no adjustment that i know of "WARNING" If you want to keep your fingers or hand NEVER put your fingers or other body parts on any belt while engine is running EVEN if clutch is slipping! All it takes is for the clutch to "Grab" then it is bye,bye fingers before you could ever think of reacting! ..... ....HEED ALL WARNINGS AND REMEMBER THE MACHINE IS FASTER THAN YOU ARE..... ..... ..
