Does anybody know if JD 100 Series that the dealers, Home Depot, Lowes sells are really built by JD?These mowers have got to be the cheapist, spindle brg eating, wore out steering, belt eating money hole, piece of shi* junk Deere has ever put their name on.I work for a dealer and see it all.I hear so many rumors, just wondering has anybody heard any real facts of this?Is it me or does society know only one name,"regardless of quality" JOHN DEERE!This will be interesting.Dont get me wrong, Deere makes some well built machines, the 100 Series is not one of them By FAR.

Yep, they are made by Deere in their Tennessee plant alright. Of course they are not the "JD your daddy owned ", but they were'nt made to be either. Entry level to compete with the rest of the entry level line of tractors from all the other manufactures. By the way, my L120 is over 3 years old and not one problem with it, mows grass all summer and moves snow all winter. I knew what I was buying and I have no regrets.

Those folks I know within Deere & Co. that work in the area of product reliability must constantly be on guard against the "chilken little syndrome" - the sky is falling. Their job is to deal with the problems and that's about all they see. Through the Deere dealers, Lowe's and Home Depot, a whole pot load of these low priced 100 Series are selling, so even if their failure rate were no higher than with the other machines, you're going to see lots of them in the service shop. Could that perhaps be part of your problem? If so, keep your dopper up and keep a stiff upper lip. I wouldn't argue that the 100 series machines are designed and built to a lower standard than the bigger machines, but the price is lower too. Still they give lots of bang for the buck.

JTB--I am restoring a 1968 Cub Cadet garden tractor. My weekly lawn machine is a JD L100 from Home Depot. There is no comparison between these two in terms of heavy duty construction. I don't expect the L100 to last 40 years. Having said that, the L100 has been a joy to drive & use. I chose it over a comparable Sears because the low sloping hood on the JD made for great vision & the comfort & ergonomics felt much better. It is very comfortable & has a terrific turning radius. I got this tractor with a 10% off coupon for $1,350. A season later, I bought a display bagger assembly (open box) for $75 at the end of the summer season. With practical expectations, these low-end tractors can be quite servicable.
