I"m crusing Ebay for a while tonight, casually looking over the various lawn tractors folks have for sale there. Came across a fellow selling a "CRAFTSMAN LT1000", and he"s got the usual group of photos posted. Couple of photos of the hood up, showing the engine... and this is when I saw this kind of "air shroud" sitting on top of what looks like a 20-something HP Briggs Twin. This shroud looks to be black plastic, fitting around the top air intake on the engine, and forming a seal against the bottom of the hood, such that apparently it forces the cooling air to be drawn up from Behind the motor, in the area between the motor and the "dashboard". I"m guessing this is shroud to keep hot air from the cylinders from getting recircuilated into the cooling intake??? Knowing how important cooling is to these big motors, the questions started popping into my head... Is this a new feature? Is it necessary? Does it actually make the motor run cooler? Has anyone seen this? Would it be helpful to get one? Looks like the part would fit other tractors too. What"s the part number? Thanks, James

Thanks for all the helpful replies, folks. I'm thinking I'd like to get a couple of these shrouds for my mowers. Would anyone know of a part number... I guess it could come from pretty much any brand because I presume the part would likely fit ok universally. This board is a great resource. Kudos to the staff.

A lot of companies are starting to do that on tractors where the engines are completely covered. They are running hotter now becasue they are running leaner to meet EPA guideleines. If they do not pull outside air into the engine to cool, it uses hot air to cool and can cause early engine problems due to inadequate cooling.

My JD318 has much the same set up...it forces cool air to come in from grates near the sides of the dash, and hot air to go down thru a grate on the bottom of the tractor.

Cub Cadet had some models back to the mid 70's that had side panels and shrouds.
