14 hp Briggs-- gas in crankcase

I have a 14hp Briggs on my riding lawnmower (Wards) and I find out that I have (had) gas in my crankcase-- likely at least a quart, maybe a little more.

This engine has a solenoid on the bottom of the carb. I was told that it is to prevent gas leaking when engine is turned off. Anyone know if this could be the problem? How do I check it? How will I know if it works?

Thank you.

Common problem for those briggs you need to replace needle and seat or install a fuel shut off valve and turn off gas after each use .

The solenoid on the bottom of the carb is an anti-dieseling soinoid to make the engine shutdown sooner when you shut the key off. This also stops some engine from making loud bangs from the muffler. If you are getting fuel in the oil you need to clean the carb as your needle and seat are not shuting off the fuel when the carb bowl is full.
