Battery Over-Charge??

Howdy,

I have a 21 year old Wheel Horse 314-8 with a Kohler engine. I've gone through 2 batteries in 2-3 year time frame. They crap out and won't hold a charge. At the battery terminals, the battery is receiving up to 16.3 volt charge @ 3600 RPM which is about 1.5V higher than it probably normally would be; however, there is no voltage regulator on this tractor. There's none in the wiring diagram and nothing I can find on the tractor. I guess the stator regulates output. I'm not sure. My question is simply - could this 16V charge be prematurely toasting the battery? If yes, what can I do about it?

Thanks

Bob

With that high voltage its probably over charging the battery. The battery may need water added to the cells often. Most places would void your warranty if they knew about the overcharge.

There has to be a regulator somewhere on that tractor. John Deere used a stator too and that was ac voltage off of it. It also had a regulator
or a rectifier to convert to dc voltage.

What is the model # of the Kohler engine? (Or, what HP?)

It DEFINITELY has a combination rectifier/voltage regulator.

Once we know the model #, you can go the the Kohler website, and view the service manual on-line, for free.

OK here's the info but I couldn't access anything on the Kohler website:

Engine: K321S 14 HP Spec# 60424

I have a copy of the original Wheel Horse Wiring Diagram in their service manual - shows no regulator.

Thanks for the help

Below is a link to the Kohler service manual, in.pdf format, on the kohler website.

Testing the regulator is covered on about page 82.

Per chance do you know of a free site with a Kawasaki small engine service manual?

OK thanks Bob. Tomorrow I'll disect down to the stator and look harder for the regulator. The documentation mentions a "unregulated" 3 Amp charging system used on some models as well as a variety of higher amp regulated systems. Does the rating on the fuse likely correspond to the type of system? Is there another way to identify what I'm working with?

The 3 amp unregulated system doesn't have a regulator, just a diode in the black wire that goes to the key switch for charging. The yellow wire is the AC for the 70 watt lighting circuit. Check the charging wire with a DC voltmeter to see what you get.

I get about 14.4 Volts when I first start the engine and it escalates to 16+ Volts after it warms up. The manual for an unregualated 3 AMP system has any voltage above 12.5V as OK but the fuse on this tractor is 15 AMP but, damn, I can't find a recifier/ regulator. I followed the leads all the way back to the flywheel. I'd have to pull the flywheel to get to the back of it to actually get to the stator but there is nothing on the wiring diagram for a single cylinder engine on the service manual. I spoke with a high volume service center in my area and they couldn't find a regulator on their computer schmatic for my 314-8 either. They too are a bit confused as their tech's memory is a bit challenged for a 21 year old tractor.

I guess in the end, the only thing I'm concerned with is the high voltage. It's not that the battery isn't charging. I just don't want to keep frying batteries if that's what's happening. Normally you'd just swat out the regulator with that condition. Maybe the high voltage is unrelated. The tractor sits idle a lot so the winter's may just take their toll in New England. Doesn't happen on my 12 year old 724Z though but I use that a lot more during the summer months.
