Out of the blue my 1450 refused to start - no click or anything. I was able to start it by jumping the solenoid. When I checked the brake safety switch it doesn't appear to be getting power (checked with the key in START position - how often do these switches go bad? The hour meter and the PTO clutch are working with the key in the RUN position. How do you check the safety switch on the PTO?

The Power for the solenoid first leaves the "S" terminal on the Key Switch. It then goes to the "C" terminal of the PTO Switch. It leaves the PTO Switch on terminal "D" (if in the off position) and then goes to the Safety Switch by the brake pedal. Then through the safety switch and onto the Starter Solenoid.

Thats what I needed to know. So I have narrowed it down to the PTO switch or the key switch.

Is there a REAL downside to by passing BOTH safety switches? At this point in its career I can only see these switches increasing the gremlim invasion.

I would NOT jumper out the PTO switch on a permanent basis. There is a real good reason why that is in the circuit. You can run a temporary jumper for testing purposes to eliminate which device is causing the problems. The Safety Switch is YOUR decision.

Lets try this again.

The safety switch on the foot brake is not getting power. How do you check (and where is it?) the safety switch on the PTO? Is it "before" or "after" or seperate from wiring on the brake safety switch?

Is it possible/likely the keyed switch has gone bad?

Given its age I'm very close to deciding to bypass the safety switches and running the wire directly from the key switch to the solenoid.

When you turn the switch to start, the voltage for the starter solinoid goes thru the switch on the foot clutch and then through the another section of the PTO switch. It may go to the PTO switck first, then the switch on the foot clutch before the voltage energizes the starter solinoid. This is your classic series circuit where a break any where in the circuit will disable the circuit. Check the entire path. It could also be a bad starter solinoid.
