Went to fire the ol' log splitter up this weekend and NO luck. Check spark, nothing.
There was slight rust on flywheel and magnet. sanded and cleaned magnet as well as bottom of magneto. Still no fire. This is an old Montgomery Wards splitter-so I have no idea how old she is.
Question, I was told by owner that it has not been touched for at least 12 years. Should I just go ahead and change magneto? How do I know if it has points or not? When I take off the magneto, there is one wire that goes down behind flywheel. Is this a ground, and can I cut it and mount the same wire on the new magneto to another ground location.? I'm hoping to do this without taking flywheel off. If it has points, I assume they are behind flywheel. In a nut shell, if everything that can go wrong can be fixed by a new magneto, I'm sure the owner will want to go that route. Just don't want to take too much off, just want to get her fired up. Thanks, Mark
I should clarify, by magneto-I am referring to the U-shaped part that mounts just off of the flywheel and picks up the magnet from flywheel.
If I am calling it wrong, sorry. If the single wire that goes behind flywheel is not a ground, what is it for? Thanks, Mark

Went the electronic magneto route. I took the old magneto in and the fella said not to waste time with an electronic kit..the magneto was in bad shape. Put new one on and she fired first pop.
Cleaned everything off and repacked wheel bearings. Noticed muffler rattling, went to give her a tightening and , yup, busted to bolt. Actually both broke when trying to remove. Aside from some stud drilling, She sounds ready.
MANY THANKS TO ALL Mark

Mark you would do well to listen to El Toro because he is right on the mark about your problem as it is more than likely your points. Taking care of the points is one solution, or an electronic set up is the other. Good luck!

Instead of replacing points get the cheap electrinic replacment better than points

If the wire from the magneto goes behind the flywheel it has points. Just clip the wire from
behind the flywheel go to the lawnmower shop and buy a new model electronic magneto install it in place of the old magneto. This changes the ignition to electronic.

I have one of those electtronic ignition kits
that replaces the points. The B&S part number is 394970 and it may have been superseded with a new number. This has to used with a two leg armture.

The points are probably behind the flywheel. They're probably the problem with no fire. Take a piece of 320 wet or dry and clean those points nice and shiny. Then take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean the points. Make sure they're gapped at .020" too. If they are pitted
I would replace them and the condenser. Take a good look at the aluminum key in the flywheel to see if it has a crease, this would throw off the timing. Buy a new sparkplug too.

You may need a puller to get the flywheel off. Sometimes they will pop off by prying on the flywheel with a screwdriver lightly and hitting the crankshaft with a copper hammer. You don't want to damage the threads on the shaft. Those points get something like oxidation and it seems to make a good insulator. Hal

To set the gap between the flywheel and the magneto/ coil, do this: Using a strip cut from a birthday or greeting card (either one), about 1 1/2 inches wide and 6 inches long, place it between the legs of the coil, and against the side of the flywheel. At this time, have the magnetic part of the flywheel turned opposite the legs of the coil. Lightly tighten the hold down bolts. Then turn the flywheel, to where the legs of the coil are spaced equally across the magnetic part. Then loosen the coil bolts until it slips down against the paper, then tighten the bolts, and turn the flywheel until the paper slips out. Assemble everything and yer good to go! This gives you approximately the correct spacing of coil to flywheel! works for me! And works with either points, or electronic ignition! note: If your engine has 2 wires coming out from behind the flywheel, it has points. Unless you intend to install electronic ignition--DO NOT cut those wires! Note: If you intend to hammer on the end of the crankshaft, first remove the nut, then turn it around and screw it on upside down, with the top of the nut even with the top of the drive-shaft! this prevents the threads from swelling, or being damaged! Note: Hal has some good ideas, too! Rustyj
