Hi! I bought a yard trac w/12.5 B&S I/C awhile back. Heard it run B4 sale - minor roughness.
Anyhoo, I was tinkering with it the other day, noticed fuel tank was mysteriously empty - some red stuff at the bottom (Marvel?). Put 2 qts of gas in it, and immediatley saw gas leaking from engine bottom near muffler. Thot float-bowl gasket was bad - pulled the bowl-about 1/2" of rust colored crud in bowl. Clean/replace, gas was not coming from there. Wrenched off (more like broke off) muffler studs and took muffler off. Gas faily cascading from exhaust manifold. I had changed the oil just B4 this exploration (at least 2 qts of gas/oil mix drained out) filled to level with 1.5qts new oil.
Repaced spark plug (was black) with new. Ran with residual in fuel line (loud but smooth!). Whats with the engine? Why gas from exhaust manifold. TIA! Real new to small engines so I really need your expert opinions here! Mike-Central MA

Hey msm, if you need some external parts for that engine i.e. carb, air cleaner, muffler etc. crank, flywheel, alternator. Launched rod through the block I think starter is trashed though. I'm keeping parts for the tractor though and other items throttle cable etc. If you would like them and want to pay the UPS charge we can work something out. I've been going to send them to the scrap yard but I just hate to I always figure it could help someone out. Let me know. CT

Welcome to the world of Briggs carbs, this is a very common problem on these engines. The needle valve starts leaking gas past the needle/seat assembly. When it does, it then gets gas into the cylinder, then past the rings and into the crankcase. You need to replace the needle and seat assembly, then as a safety thing so it does not leak gas again, put a fuel shutoff in the fuel line, then make sure you shut it off evry time you get off the tractor. There is also a possibilty that you may need to replace the lower pan gasket, we have had some of them that the gas will soften the paper gasket and casue it to blow out and leak oil there also. Good luck.

Possibly stuck carb float allowing gas to flood cylinder and crankcase if tank is gravity flow.

Fuel leaking by needle and seat in carb
Excessive fuel leaks into cylinder past rings and into exhaust and crankcase oil
