I have enough pieces on hand to build another CC. I want to build a 12 HP. The only crank that I have is already 10 under & scored. Is there anything second rate bout having the crank pin welded up & brought back to std? It costs bout $75 locally. Have others had good or bad experiences with this? KB

We have had the best luck by doing as ANON says, take it to a good machine shop, with an old rod, have them get a set of rod bearings from a continetal engine, have the crank turned to fit the bearings, then have the rod machined to fit the inserts and you are good to go. I have tried the welding up and turning back to standard, with marginal luck, sometimes you will get weld pits in the journal, and I have also heard of the weld flaking off and destroying it all, and when most machine shops weld up and turn down, they assume no repsonsibility if something goes wrong.

say that the crank cleans up at .014 under. have a rod fit special to it. i grind em just till they clean up. no reason to go 020 if you dont have to.there are some 020 rods on ebay also.lucas

You could have it turned to .020 and have a rod machined to fit a rod bearing from a Continental engine that was used in the Massey Harris Pony and AC G. Bearing cost about $15.00 and about $20 to machine out the rod.

I have had this done to Kohler K series cranks without any problem.

I've seen SUPPOSEDLY good standard cranks sell pretty cheap on fleabay. At least, they could be ground .010", if needed.
