Anyone know what normal compression is or should be on a mid -80's 16 HP Twin cylinder I/C Briggs and Stratton? looking to purchase a Simplicity tractor with same and looking for some comfort level on engine, started right up after an 8 month sit, blew some smoke for about 30 seconds then cleared up. Ran for 10 minutes or so. Let sit for half an hour, started again with no smoke. Got compression readings of 90 and 94 psi. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

A compression test is not an accurate way to test the internals of an engine. The most accurate way is to do a cylinder leak down test. You can have good compression, but still have valve problems. briggs twins from back that era have a history of valve and valve seat problems. 90-100# compression is a good reading for any flat head engine, but without a cylinder leak down test or taking heads off for inspection, I still would not get that "fuzzy" feeling there is no problems with the engine that could pop up any time, knowing the history of that series engine.

Thanks for your reply, appreciate it. Is a leak down test a difficult test to run without specialized tools, or does a mechanic need to do it? I'm far from an expert! Familiar with the term but not the know how, is there a link or something that you know of that explains steps? Not paying too much for the whole setup (IMO anyway) but would be nice to know what is going on with the engine up front.

Thanks again
