My neighbor is offering to barter a Craftsman Riding mower to me for some work. I don't have the model num in front of me, but it has a 2 cyl Onan engine and as I recall it was made by American Yard Products (I looked it up a while back). It is yellow and white and the engine has a separate muffler for each cylinder. It is a nice solid machine and comes with an extra blade deck and a snowblower. It is not stamped steel frame like an MTD- this sucker is very solidly built. I think it is from the 1960's.

It was running when the guy first got it, but apparently he bogged it down too much in heavy grass and killed the engine. I went over and looked at it in the summer and the little shaft that operates the points was not moving.

So- I'm assuming that some cam or gear in there is messed up.

Is it at all possible to get internal parts for Onan engines -either through sears or Onan? Are these chronically bad engines?

I have a roper T-20 garden tractor that suddenly started making a racket. It has an onan engine. I did not run it out of oil. I took off the flywheel & timing cover and found that the teeth were stripped off the cam shaft gear, and the crank shaft gear. The oil pump gear was good and just needed some dressing up. I was able to get the two new gears I needed from Cummings-Bridgeway for a reasonable price. They deal in onan engines. I know they are located in Columbus and Toledo Ohio and else where I am sure. I have my tractor put back together and running fine.

It would have been made after February of 1973 as the BF engine didn't go into full production until then. He might have thrown a connecting rod and broken the camshaft. This happens when you run the engine low on oil and sieze the number 2 con rod, it is the farthest from the oil pump.
You could check with Rick at Cassady's Service at 763-434-9704, cass71852@AOL.com. He worked in engineering at Onan and has a huge supply of parts and engines.

Possibily a GT-16 or GT-18 tractor? Had one myself.A rugged tractor with a BF series Onan. Cam plunger may be stuck in the up position,Or the point screw may have loosened up a bit and caused the points to slip?? Check those two things first, then pull one of the heads and see if valves open and close.Cam failures are low on these engines but anything can happen too..... ...

You can call M&D Mower at 1-866-914-1252. Be sure to have the engine model number, spec or code
that they may need.

We had generators with Onan engines both diesel and gas versions. The gas generators were 5kw and those twin cylinder engines were constructed
very well. They only turn 1800 rpm's and were not very noisy. Hal

Tractor would have been made by Roper not AYP.

It is a good/heavy tractor, but Onan parts are getting pricey and slowly getting hard to get. You can still get most, but with the cost of Onan parts, you better be doing a lot of work if'n you are gonna barter for this tractor. Last I priced carb parts a kit was over $60.00.

He needs a bit of grading for a putting green. I think a few hours with my skid steer will do it. And he is 1/4 mile away, so no transport issues.

I think he paid $500 for it in running condition. This guys manages to destroy every piece of equip[ that he gets his hands on. He had one of his workers mow the lawn and he apparently overworked the engine and maybe overheated it.

The operator probably ran it out of oil, checked it when it quit then added some so no one would know he forgot to do it before he started it.

Ask me how I know that story.
