Ag Tires or Chains?

Hopefully some one out there has tried Ag Tires on a heavy Garden Tractor and 2 link tire chains. I have a 20HP Simplicity Sunstar rebadged as a Duetz Allis Ultima. Very heavy.... Has 23x10.50 12 rears. Nice floatation but no traction on grass especially on my rolling lawn. I thought about Ag treads, heard many nay sayers & then heard the same thing about the tire chains. Any thought from users which will provide decent traction versus lawn damage????? ??? THANKS!!!!

I use AG style atv tires filled w/eco friendly anti-freeze on my simplicity. Then chain in the winter time. The atv tire has a bit softer sidewall and grips great. use the tractor for snow removale and use it to scrape horse dry lots(slick with manure). a photo is in arcives under simplictiy 3410

Been runnning 26/12/12 Goodyear Terra tires for 30 years on my Roper built Sears. Never could get enough traction from turf tires.

No one else has mentioned it yet, so I will. Don't be afraid to fill your tires with windshield washer fluid either. That will help quite a bit.

We were told that using windshield washer fluid wasn't a good idea. Any ideas why we were told this?

Beats me. I put in all six of my eight wheels on lawnmowers (2 riders) about 4 years ago. It made them more stable and helped with traction when pulling the lawn sweeper up the hill while mowing. Most of the tires I put it in had tubes, but at least one was tubeless. No sign of damage yet.

They use used permanent antifreeze in farm tractor tires here in MD since calcium chloride is hard to dispose of. Could be used on garden tractors too. Hal

I've been using lug tires on my mower for as long as I can remember. I would never go back to turf tires. My yard is too steep in places to take a chance on turf tires. I also use a hydro for safety purposes. Manual transmissions will run off with you. Too dangerous!
I find that if I'm turning around a tree the lug tires will eventually cause the grass to disappear. Starting out on a hill will do the same thing. If you keep moving in a straight line this will not happen.
My cousin lives next door and uses chains only. His yard is flat, but he says he likes the chains because they create an aerator effect.

I have been using ag tires 26x12x12 on the past four tractors on my place. Wouldn't have it any other way. The tractors have been NH S-12, NH S-14, JD 318 and presently a JD 425. I have never been disappointed with traction on any surface. In Summer, run tires unloaded. In Autumn, Winter, and Spring I run double cast iron weights on each tire. Never without traction and never run chains. I would highly recommend ag tires. One thing I did find was that the Goodyear style tread might be a better choice because it is easier to turn under certain low traction conditions (icey driveway}. I am presently running Carlyle tires. The Goodyear style is more rounded in profile.

I replaced the worn out turf tires on my old garden tractor back home with ag tires. Much more traction and doesn't hurt the lawn at all. I prefer chains with a 4 link spacing. I just seem to have a lot better traction with this setup than with a set of chains with a 2 link space. My dad has a garden tractor, which is a newer version of mine as in 10 years newer, with turf tires and chains with 2 link spacing and his seems to spin tires more than mine does when plowing snow. But that's just my opinion.

I had the same problem with the turf tires on my Wards tractor. Adding wheel weights may help. I see them plowing with ag tires on their garden tractors, but I have to use chains. I wouldn't use chains on the lawn. The cables they use on
radial tires in place of chains may be a better choice. Try this web site. Hal

I see them plowing ground with those ag tires. I would be afraid to spit in front of my turf tires.
I can't really complain after using them 35 years.
Hilly ground is where you have problems mowing with turf tires. I use vee bar chains for snow removal and plowing the garden. Hal
