Hi
A buddy has one of these tractors and uses it for blowing snow. The hydro will work for about 5 minutes and quit. The part number is 1722 180. He checks the oil and it is still is cold. Is the tranny shot or is something else the matter? He was told that it is no longer available. Is there another make of tranny that will work? It might be tough to find a used one.
Thanks in advance
Ken, Tavistock, Ontario, Canada

Thanks for the replies. I haven't looked at the tractor yet. I don't know if the filter & oil has been changed. The valves you mentioned, are they on the hydro tranny, or with the bank of valves? Where is the bypass valve?
Thanks
Ken

Sorry to tell you, the 1256 uses an Eaton Series 10 hydro, which is JUNK. As soon as they wear a bit, they "slip" when the oil warms up. There's NO fix, except to replace the hydro, IF you can still find $$$$ one.

Here's a link to an Eaton dealer locator, if you want to see if they are available and price them:

El Toro is correct about the filter. Also, correct oil and letting the hydro warm up sufficiently before usage. How long does your friend let the engine and hydro system warm up before using? By not allowing time for the oil to get to operating temperature the system could be starved for oil. He may try putting an engine block heater on the transmission housing to warm the oil before starting the tractor. I am not sure just who made the hydro for Bolens; Hydro Gear, Eaton, Sauer Sundstrand (now Sauer Danfoss). More than likely it was Hydro Gear. You may want to go to their home site and check with one of their distributors as to parts availability. Just because whoever bought out Bolens doesn't cary parts doesn't necessarily mean they aren't available through a manufacurer's distribution center.

Your friend may also want to be sure that the oil reservoir is filled to the proper lever. (2)Inspect the control linkage for correct adjustment. (3)Inspect all the valves (by pass, charge relief, implement relief). (4) Check charge and system pressures.

If the hydro ran good in the summer months then it could be something simple. Sad to say though that those hydros do eventually wear out. I doubt that is the case here though. Keep us posted.
