I picked up what I "think" is a rocket rear tine tiller by Ariens. It has a Tecumseh engine, hi/lo range lever on the crankcase, forward and reverse lever. My engine runs w/very minor smoke but my main problem is the carb and linkage. The carb. is flat worn out or so I think. The main butterfly shaft is worn badly and wobbles in the carb. The bowl drips (really bugs me!), put new seat and gas valve in it and adj. the float but still will not idle or maintain constant rpm. I don't really know how to hook up the rpm cable in conjunction with the govenor as the link for the gov. is missing. Think I would be better off with another bolt on carb. and some help (photos would be nice) of how (which hole does the rpm cable go in, etc.)to hook up the carb. Mine has a large three position choke lever on it...full/half and no choke. Any help out there w/a replacement (used) carb? I also was told that one lever when pulled moved the steering arms to the left or right....well, when I pull the control lever next to the rpm lever I see something move in the crankcase area but the arms don't swing...froze? Possible but afraid to get out my 3 lb. sledge hammer. Sure could use some help fm an expert out there. Will be picking your brain so get ready. Central Texas is home.

I'm assuming you've got the 7 horse model, and not the little 4 horse. The carbuetors on those things were pretty touchy, even when new. The early ones came with either the Walbro carb - or - the Tecumseh carb - and after that, all had the Tecumseh carb only. With some of them, all you have to do is dissassemble and reassemble while the carb is upside down, and the carb is ruined. Also, with the Tecumseh carbs - once you remove the main jet - and re-install it usually will never run correcty. The new replacement main-jet is undercut in way that you CAN put it back it and have it work. In regard to worn throttle shafts - when real bad, idling will be somewhat inconsistent but still work. In most cases, those things won't idle because the internal idle-circuit is ruined.
Most carbs we had to replace was because of a bad idle-circuit. Those carbs are easy to find - they are all over the place. Just take one off a junk snowblower or riding mower. I've got a basket full of them.
You can also buy a brand-new "universal replacement" carb from Tecumseh. In regard to the Rocket tiller itself - probably one of best tillers ever sold. Much better than the Troy-Builts. I worked for a place in the early 70s - and we used the Rockets as rental-machines - we had a "fleet" of six of them. One nice feature is the ability to turn off the rotating tines but keeps the wheels going. Can't do that with a Troy-built.

The engine will never idle with a worn throttle shaft. Buy a service manuel for the Tecumseh engine will show how the govener linkage is connected. DO NOT run the engine much without the govener connected or you may throw a rod and possibly put a hole in the block. At one time you could buy a new carb from Tec. but they were pricey.
