got the 317 in the shop to work it over..had to take motor loose to replace the screen over the flywheel..bought one used off of ebay and its a tad bit smaller..fits inside blower shroud..how critical is this... there is probably 1/4 inch gap all the way around..also the hydro control lever when running forward wont stay in place i noticed a shock like thing thats attached to it is that what keeps it in place?..is there a way to tighten this...thanks for all the help

There were a number of variations of the flywheel screens and some used NONE at all... just the "belly screen".

To snug up the hydro lever tighten up nut #15 which squeezes the friction pads #12 against the mechanism.

thanks so much for the info i dont think there are any friction pads on it so thats probably the problem..thanks again..do you know if the pto crank seal can be replaced without seperating the case?..thanks again

Yes.

However; they are countersunk slightly below the face of the engine closure plate to make room for the "nubs" that center the clutch. I made a driver on the lathe; out of aluminum stock; to keep the seal "square" in the bore while countersinking it a little.
