Where can I get parts for a 1975 Bolens 1656. It's in pretty decent shape and I need starter brushes. I've tried local tractor supplys to no avail. I may have to opt for a used starter if I can't find parts. Thanks for the help...Ron

On the side of starter(usually side against eng block)is a gum label with starter part#(33835 or some similar#)take this starter# to local mower shop, they can look up parts breakdown of starter on miocrofiche or computer,if it's like most tecumseh starters,it uses what's called a brush card, fiber card with 4 new brushs & holders, you disconnect old card & drop in new & connect, there are places online that sell them online for $10,BUT you need holder# as there are 3-4 different numbers.

Thanks for the info. I have the starter off and did see the numbers. (33835). Do you know of a specific site where I might find the brush card. I called an auto parts store and he said he might be able to fit new brushes, but I'd much rather change the card as it has some charring on the underside. Thanks for any info. Ron

As I said in earlier reply, goto local mower shop,an auto parts store WILL NOT have brushes, also if you look at brushholder, you will note wire leads from brushes are spot welded to brushholder, whole card is designed to be replaced as a unit. You can goto www.mfgsupply.com,they list 2 cards in small eng, tecumseh starters, you might want to also goto www.outdoorproducts(you can view a breakdown & parts list of eng at this site, but they only show starter as a unit & no breakdown of actual starter parts) & www.jackssmallengines.com and prowl around on website to see if they have breakdown of starter shown, whichever site you goto you will need breakdown to find out what card# is for correct replacement part, you might want to call mfg on mon,I've ordered from them many times, got a brushcard from them 2 yrs ago for a 10hp,were very helpfull looking up part#,you might also call other 2 places on mon also, but 1st try local dealer, list is about $26 for card.

Have you tried the local dealers? There should be some Tecumseh engine service centers in the area and I would think that they could assist you with getting the parts you need. Your local NAPA Auto Parts Store most likely doesn't have the parts on hand but can order them for you. Good Luck with your search for the parts.

Following your advice, I did a very short search on the webb and found the brush card at Pats Small Engine Plus for only $9.95 and when I added a fuel filter (which I also needed) $5.95, I got shipping for only $5.95 more. Thanks for the nudge in the right direction. Here's hoping this solves all my engine problems...Ron

Hey, I've been out of town and just got home. Hope your equipment is running like a champ now.

Take care,
