Bar lug tires for Zero Turn mower?

Not sure if Zero Turn mowers are included on this forum, I usually hang out in the Farmall forum on this site but thought I'd through the question out here anyway.

I just acquired a very nice little Toro/Wheel Horse zero turn mower with 18x9.50-8 rear tires on it. They are in very good shape but are just standard mower tread and I found it is real easy to spin the tires if grass is wet or you are on a mild slope. Would putting the bar-type tires on help with traction? Would they tear up the yard when I turned sharp and pivoted around?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Have you run a Zero turn mower before?? That is a what they do, spin on wet grass and going uphill. It takes some practice to know how to turn without spinning excessively. Bar lug tires will tear up your lawn. Try having someone that knows how to run a Zero turn to give you a few pointers. My trouble is that I always try to do every thing too fast. This might be your problem also.

Have fun,

Bob

I had a Dixon ZTR back around 1980 and didn't remember that being an issue for the 4 or 5 years I had it. Perhaps this Toro is just weighted different or something? It seems to have a lot of get-up-and-go so maybe I just need to throttle back a bit. Thanks for your help.

Brent, a Dixon is what I have now, it is a 2000 year model. It only has a 14.5hp Briggs on it, but that wheel spin is my biggest problem. I am not mowing lawn grass but pasture grass, so I really don't care if the wheel spins. I have found on it that if I start backing up before I turn 180 degrees, it drastically cuts the wheel spin.

Good luck,

Bob

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that out tommorrow. I had my 15 year-old son on it after school today and was glad mom wasn't home to watch his first time on it, he tore up so much ground it made the pack of moles living in the yard so embarrased that they packed up and moved out.....
