I have a tiller (from late 60"s or early 70"s) with a 5hp briggs engine. Last fall I had no spark, so I replaced points, condenser and plug. Ran fine, so I stored for the winter. Sat. pulled out and it started on first pull and ran rough and then sheered the flywheel key. This happened two more times. I let it sit until Sun. and checked the oil and the crank case was filled with gasoline. I changed the oil and tried again and the same thing of sheering the flywheel key.
Does this sound like the Carb has problems as well? I would like to get your opinions, thanks.

Right now I would say you have a carb problem, check for stuck, sticking or defective float or dirt in float needle seat, preventing float needle from shutting off gas to carb,if you have a load of gas in crankcase, gas is running thru carb into cyl & crankcase, what's shearing key is you are flooding cyl & drawing diluted oil from crankcase into cyl causing piston to hydro lock in cyl

I'm not sure if this will help, but are you using the belvill washer under the crank nut or clutch? That is a cup-shaped spring washer, and is important to keep the flywheel tight. Also, be sure you have it torqued right. I'm not at home where my books are, but maybe someone will tell you the proper torque.

And, don't use any oil or grease on the tapered shaft hub or flywheel bore. They must be dry in order for the two pieces to grip properly.
