When I first start up the 11-hp Briggs engine, it runs cold and a bit sluggish. Before it gets warmed up, I get a lot of smoke for about a minute.

After the smoke clears away the engine will run for hours without any more smoke. I wonder what causes this?

Sounds like you have worn piston rings or a carb problem. Clean the air filter. Inspect the rings and hone the cylinder before installing new rings.

Usally just an indication that a verticle shaft engine has some wear. While setting a bit of oil can seep past worn rings etc into cylinder, and when first started needs to be burned off.Can foul plug slightly, causing operator to apply more choke than normal, creating a slightly flooded condition.Takes a "minute" for cylinder to clear/warm/burn the excess gas/oil.Usually not critical, just check oil regularily(as one should anyway :)

Thanks.

It does use oil. This engine is on a Cub Cadet 111 which is quite an old tractor.
