Last year this motor started leaking oil, so I just kept on top of the oil level. I watch it carefully and see that the oil is not leaking around the vertical shaft, but rather somewhere near the head. I cannot locate an exact spot, but I have been guilty of overfilling with oil in the past and was wondering if that may have created the problem. Any suggestions on what I can do?
Thanks

On a 11 HP B&S flat head engine there in NO WAY oil can leak from a loose head. Check to be sure the bottom of the engine, crankcase, is not loose on the block. Rare but I have seen it on a 11 HP. B&S had a real problem on early 14.5 HP OHV engine with the crankcase coming loose.

With all do respect Kent that can happen on a vertical crank Briggs remember the cylinder is horizontal so if he overfills the crancase it will spill over in to the cylinder and if it is less than perfectly sealed the oil will seep into the cylinder and leak out a loose head and I've seen it quite a bit. Also I have three engines leaking out the crankcase gaskets in my shop right now oddly enough they are not synchro engines makes me wonder.

If you fill the crankcase full enough to get oil pass the rings to leak out a loose head, you will see many other problem first. These include MASSIVE oil burning, Hydraulic cylinder and if you could get the engine to run it would blow so much oil out the crankcase vent that is over the valve springs and directed under the air filter, the engine would also smoke excessivly and would mest likily choke down and die from some much oil entering the carbs air intake.

You threw me when you said it's coming out around the head but a couple things to check might be to retorque the head bolts and you might find it starting quicker after that and make sure you check around the crankcase gasket because mine has done both and yes overfilling with oil could do it seeping out the head gasket. Vibration has seemed to loosen the crankcase screws and unfortunately you have to remove the engine to tighten them up because they are in a counterbore up in the crankcase upside down and of course one thing leads to another because you should change the crankcase gasket because it is oil soaked and of course while your at it you need to replace the crankshaft seal and blah, blah, blah. That's why after each season I just pull the engine and tighten the crankcase screws I thought about using locktight but I do want to replace it some day. Its just easier keeping an eye on the oil level. The cottonpicken thing starts on half a turn and if it ain't broke don't fix it. My two cents, good luck, CT
